Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) is a UGC-recognized private university in Gangtok, Sikkim, India, established in 1995 as India’s first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) university, in collaboration with the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Education & Medical Group (MEMG). Accredited by NAAC with an A+ grade, SMU comprises leading institutes such as Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) and Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), and offers academic programs in engineering, medical, nursing, physiotherapy, liberal arts, and management.
Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), formally established in 1995 under the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act, is a pioneering PPP institution formed through collaboration between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Education & Medical Group (MEMG). SMU is UGC-recognized, NAAC A+ accredited, and compliant with AIU, AICTE, and other statutory bodies. The university operates two main campuses: Majitar Technical Campus, home to the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), and the Tadong Medical Campus, hosting SMIMS, SMCON, SMCPT, and the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences & Liberal Arts. Spread across approximately 35–44 acres, the campuses are designed for a vibrant academic, residential, and extracurricular environment. SMU offers a wide array of academic programs—over 50 undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses—spanning engineering, medical sciences, nursing, physiotherapy, computer applications, arts, commerce, and management. The MBBS program at SMIMS is recognized by the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) and delivered through a state-of-the-art teaching hospital with tertiary care services in North East India. SMIT, with over 3,500 students and 13 academic departments, offers B.Tech., M.Tech., MBA, MCA, and PhD programs. It is accredited by NBA, UGC, and AICTE, and was ranked among top private engineering colleges in Eastern India in recent assessments. Research and innovation are key priorities: SMU’s Directorate of Research facilitates funded projects from agencies like AICTE, DST, DBT, DRDO, and ISRO. SMIT also houses the Atal Incubation Centre (AIC-SMUTBI), supported by the Atal Innovation Mission to nurture regional start-ups in North East India. The online education wing—Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), launched in 2023— offers UGC-entitled online BA, BCom, MA, MCA, MBA and other programs through “Online Manipal,” with identical validity to on-campus degrees. SMU is consistently ranked among India’s top multidisciplinary private universities: In 2024 it fell in the NIRF band 150–200, and in 2025 was ranked 24th among private institutions by IIRF. Student life is enriched by modern hostels, digital libraries, fully equipped labs, sports, and wellness amenities. Services such as clean water (RO), 24×7 Wi-Fi, gymnasiums, and recreation halls support a comfortable residential experience across both campuses. The Training & Placement Cell fosters industry engagement, delivering strong placement outcomes. Recruiters include leading companies across IT, healthcare, engineering, and consultancy sectors.
